George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D.

In 1998, Dr. George Hanbury became the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Nova Southeastern University (NSU). NSU, located in the Fort Lauderdale area, is the largest independent institution of higher learning in the State of Florida and the eight largest in the nation with an enrollment of more than 27,000 students. In addition to his duties as EVP/COO, Dr. Hanbury is also an Associate Professor for the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at NSU.
Prior to his appointment as Executive Vice President, Dr. Hanbury had a career in municipal administration totaling more than thirty years, and was the Chief Executive Officer (city manager), to the following cities: Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Portsmouth, Virginia, and Virginia Beach, Virginia. In addition, he was an Assistant City Manager in the cities of Norfolk, and Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Dr. Hanbury holds a Ph.D. degree in Public Administration from Florida Atlantic University, a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Old Dominion University in Virginia, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a major in Public Administration from Virginia Tech. He has been certified through the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia and was inducted into Pi Alpha Alpha, the national honor society for the field of public affairs and public administration.
Dr. Hanbury has been recognized for his leadership by groups such as:

- The City Council of the City of Portsmouth
- The City/County Managers’ Association of Virginia, and of Florida
- The Broward County City/County Management Association (BCCMA)
- The Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority

- The NAACP Chapters of Portsmouth, and of Fort Lauderdale
- The Chambers of Commerce of Greater Fort Lauderdale, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach
- The International Swimming Hall of Fame
- The unions representing the City of Fort Lauderdale fire fighters, police officers, and general employees.
In addition, he has been honored and awarded the designations of:

- American Diabetes Association Valor Award Recipient 2005

Dr. Hanbury’s civic activities are represented by his voluntary service with the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and his appointment to the Boards of the following organizations:

Dr. Hanbury has lectured throughout the country to various executive groups on topics such as leadership, public policy, the council/manager form of government, economic development, executive motivation and public speaking.
